Regular slotted cases
A regular slotted container, often specified as FEFCO 0201, is a familiar transit-case format with top and bottom flaps. It is supplied flat with the manufacturer’s joint formed, then erected and closed as part of packing.
Discuss the closure method and equipment along with the board and dimensions. The 0201 code identifies the structure; it does not establish the contents, strength, printing or line compatibility.
Crash-lock bases
A crash-lock base uses pre-glued base panels that form as the box is opened. It can reduce the base-forming steps at a manual packing station, but filling and top closure still need to be considered.
Our Toolstation shipper and Marmite SRP demonstrate crash-lock constructions in different applications. Check the actual filled weight and pack handling with the design team rather than assuming the name alone establishes a load capacity.
Hand-erect die-cut packs
Die-cut structures can use folds, tabs and slots to create a pack suited to its contents. They can also include a separate lid or fitting. Assembly steps vary with the design.
The Brothers Cider pack is a hand-erect 0427, while Lidl Deluxe uses a hand-erect base with a separate lid. A sample lets the people doing the packing check the sequence, access to the product and closure.
Machine-erect and wraparound packs
Automatic equipment has requirements for blank dimensions, board, creases, cut-outs and forming or closing operations. Share the machine make, model, tooling constraints and existing specification; involve the equipment supplier where needed.
Our UP & GO example is a machine-erect wrap SRP containing eight 330 ml cartons. Confirm compatibility through trials and agreed acceptance criteria for your intended line.
Check the pack at the workstation
- How blanks are stored, presented and picked up.
- The steps and materials needed to form, fill and close the pack.
- Product orientation, access and any inserts or dividers.
- Finished-pack checks, pallet layout and handling after packing.
- For SRP, how the pack will subsequently be opened and placed on shelf.
